On Saturday, May 17, 2025, at 1:00 pm, the Greater Kansas City Black History Study Group will host its monthly program and meeting. This month, we delve into the life, work, and legacy of a lesser-known Kansas City historical figure, C.H.J. Taylor. Although C.H.J. Taylor was an influential journalist and political organizer during the 1890s, he has been mostly forgotten by historians. To date, there have been only two scholarly studies on his career: a scholarly article from the 1980s and a recent book-length study. The latter will be the focus of this presentation, which will consider possible reasons for Taylor’s fall from prominence to obscurity.
Our guest speaker for the day will be Dr. Ian Munro, Emeritus Professor at William Jewell College in Liberty, MO, where he taught English and Humanities. The title of his talk is,
“From National Prominence to Historical Obscurity: The Story of Kansas City-Based C.H.J. Taylor”
