Native Americans and Missouri

Missouri Humanities strives to implement and support initiatives that highlight Native stories and voices and increase our understanding of the Native American experience in Missouri. We engage audiences with information on cultural history, education, and preservation, and connect people to Native American heritage and contemporary Native topics through digital programs, partnerships, and experiences.

Trail of Tears Mapping

We collaborated with a skilled team of experts, researchers, local partners, and descendants to create an interpretive map highlighting historical sites and trails across the state related to the story of the Trail of Tears in Missouri. The work may change or be added to over time, so please check back to see the progress!

Land Acknowledgement

Missouri Humanities respectfully acknowledges that the land on which we reside has cultural significance for many Native peoples, including the Osage, Otoe, Missouria, Sauk and Fox, Ioway, Kansas, Illini, Kickapoo, Peoria, Shawnee, Delaware, Sioux, Piankashaw, and Cherokee. We are ever mindful that these peoples continue a sacred relationship with the lands we occupy, and we recognize their integral contributions to the cultural heritage of this state and to our nation’s history.
