Fort Mason Monument Project

Fort Mason Monument Project

Following several years of research into the history of Fort Mason, a frontier fort built in the Missouri Territory during the War of 1812, the County of Ralls and the Ralls County Historical Society collaborated to construct a monument commemorating the fort and honoring the soldiers who served there. Fort Mason was built by a detachment of First Regiment Soldiers under the command of Lt. John Campbell and a Company of U.S. Rangers commanded by Captain Nathen Boone under the direct supervision of Territorial Governor Benjamin Howard.

A committee was formed in January 2024, and plans were made to initiate the process. The general design of the monument was agreed upon, and fundraising began as the project was to be funded by grants and donations. The first application made by the committee for grant help was to the Missouri Humanities Society. The guidance and help with the process provided by Ashley Beard and Clarice Britton were outstanding. Their interest in helping to bring this important aspect of Missouri history to life to educate future generations is deeply appreciated. The $5000.00 grant from Missouri Humanities helped purchase one of the Bronze plaques, which records the history of Fort Mason and was instrumental in securing other funding for this historical commemoration.

The Fort Mason Monument Project is complete and is available to be visited. The monument is located along the Mississippi River in the Riverview Acres Subdivision, South of Saverton, Missouri, in T56N, R3W, Sec 21.
