History’s Mirror: George Caleb Bingham, the Painter of Missouri

The first part of the presentation will cover the life and times of Bingham and his relevance to Missouri and America as one of the most important (and self-taught) painters of the 19th Century.

The second part will cover the current, on-line project of the George Caleb Bingham Catalogue Raisonne – which is the definitive research tool to research the artist and his nearly 500 paintings known to exist. (New paintings are discovered every year and its possible that our audience may include people who have Bingham paintings within their family history/lineage.)

The catalogue raisonne project is free and accessible to the general public and supported by the Riverbank Foundation, a 401c3 incorporated in the state of Missouri in 2015. The catalogue provides high-resolution photographs of Bingham paintings, bibliographies, provenance, and exhibition histories for every painting listed thus far. It is a work in progress.
