Maifest in Hermann MO

Maifest in Hermann MO

Thanks to a generous grant from Missouri Humanities, the 2024 Maifest in Hermann MO, was able to expand its offerings and enhance the festival experience for all. The grant helped fund the traditional German dancers and provided tents for the Hermann Arts Council, which were used for the information booth and children’s programs—and will continue to serve the community for years to come.

The Maifest, or May Festival, has long been a cherished tradition celebrating the end of the school year in many German-American communities since the 1800s. Continuing this vibrant legacy, the 2024 Maifest was held the Saturday after the school year ended, transforming the town into a lively one-day celebration that offered something for everyone.

Maifest for 2024 spanned two bustling main streets, featuring a delightful array of  food trucks, vendors and musical acts performed throughout the day. At the heart of the festival was a celebration of German heritage, highlighted by captivating performances from German dancers, fascinating German tin-type displays, and five folk artists demonstrating traditional crafts. Local businesses joined in the festivities by decorating traditional Maypoles, adding to the festive and colorful atmosphere.

The 2024 Maifest was a joyous occasion that brought the community together in celebration, honoring cherished traditions while creating new memories for all ages. We recently wrapped up our 2025 Maifest, being our most successful by building on many of the successes from 2024. The tents provided by the Missouri Humanities grant were used again this year for children’s art programs and other activities sponsored by the Hermann Arts Council, continuing to benefit the community and enrich the festival experience.
