The Battles at Lucas Bend

Ulysses Grant was involved in two battles along an old bend in the Mississippi River, southeast of Charleston, Missouri; One was his amphibious landing just before the Battle of Belmont, Missouri (November 7, 1861, and the second found him aboard an ironclad vessel in January, 1862. The speaker describes in detail the historical significance of these two events, often ignored in the history books.
