Meet the Author: Tim Scherrer with Do Our Part: The Tragic Tale of the Weldon Spring Ordnance Works

Author Tim Scherrer will present on his new book, Do Our Part: The Tragic Tale of the Weldon Spring Ordnance Works at the Weldon Spring Interpretive Center on the 86th Anniversary of the Plant announcement. The construction of the Weldon Spring Ordnance works forced the displacement of 727 residents and the elimination of the villages of Howell, Hamburg and Toonerville in a forty-five day window. The Weldon Spring Ordnance Works employed five thousand workers and produced daily a million pounds of TNT and DNT for the war effort.

Scherrer will tell the story of the plant announcement , land acquisition and the subsequent U.S Supreme Court case. Also discussed is the construction and operation of the plant, which made major contributions to the war effort. Also told in the program is the struggles of the Francis Howell School District, which fought for it’s survival under very difficult circumstances.

Scherrer’s book fills in the details of this tragic story of service, sacrifice, and victory in World War II on the Homefront.
