Part 1 - Marketing and Social Media Engagement

Mandi Retter will detail how small communities and organizations can maximize their social media engagement and current social media best practices. How can social media and other marketing tactics best engage both your members of your community and visitors to your community? How do you choose the best marketing strategies for your organization’s needs? Bring your questions as we explore these topics and more.

Part 2 - Interregional Cooperation and Creating Critical Mass

This presentation will demonstrate the importance of interregional cooperation, showing spatial data including: maps showing commuting patterns, workforce and job location, lodging availability, distances from major metros. We will discuss creating “critical mass” by pairing our attractions with other communities, designing advertising that “packages” regional assets for visitors, and looking at some examples of communities that have done this successfully.

Part 3 - Creating and Sustaining an Effective Volunteer Program

This program will look at the many aspects of managing in-house volunteers and eVolunteers. The Missouri State Archives has benefited from volunteers since the 1970s and began our eVolunteer program in 1999. Join two State Archives staffers as they discuss the various aspects of recruiting and retaining volunteers, along with project management and lessons learned.

Heritage Preservation Workshop

Part 1 - Historic Preservation Strategies for Rural Communities

Learn the essential elements of a local historic preservation program. This talk will discuss strategies for small or remote communities to establish and maintain a preservation program, as well as the tools and resources available to support local preservation activities. It will also address various other services available through the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) and how these may intersect with local preservation activities.

Part 2 - Historic Preservation Advocacy 5

The Good, the Bad, and the Unrepresented: Advocating for Historic Preservation Statewide and in Your Own Community” See how the Missouri Alliance for Historic Preservation, our statewide non-profit organization, advocates for and recognizes historic resources through its unique position, and learn how your own local non-profit organization can do this important work in your own home town. Learn about programs and activities that recognize excellence, advocate for the endangered, and urge the passage of laws and supportive public policy to insure the future protection of the cultural resources so important to the history of our small towns and the State of Missouri. 

Heritage Tourism Cultural Heritage Workshop

Part 1 - Finding Your Travel M-O

Stephen Foutes, Director of the Missouri Division of Tourism, will provide an overview of its work to promote Missouri as a leisure travel destination. You’ll also get a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the Division’s “That’s My M-O” campaign and hear information about destinations and attractions around Missouri. Part 2 - Highway 36 Heritage Alliance

Marci Bennett, Executive Director of the St. Joseph CVB, details the formation of the Highway 36 Heritage Alliance and learn how this regional approach works across multiple counties to market tourism and build upon one-another’s cultural heritage.
