Through Veterans’ Eyes

Honoring our veterans and supporting programs for them is an important aspect of the Missouri Humanities Council’s mission. In October 2004, we granted the Cass County Historical Society with funding for a portion of the annual Living History Festival. They invited Pearl Harbor survivors to the festival to meet and share their stories with the local community.

The veterans were invited on stage at various points during the festival to narrate their experience. The festival also had historic artifacts on display and hands-on activities for guests to complete. Battle simulations were performed, which was one of the most popular aspects of the festival. A USO show and dance, as well as a Veteran’s salute, were also performed. Attendees at the festival loved the performances and recounted how incredibly moving the veterans’ stories were.
