Water/Ways Exhibit comes to Cape Girardeau

Our world is water and, so are we. An essential component of life on our planet, water powers the environment’s engine, impacting climate and helping to shape and sculpt the landscape. We rely on water for health, hydration, food supplies and hygiene. As a shared resource, water connects everyone.

The Smithsonian’s Water/Ways highlights contemporary and historical issues impacting our relationship with water as Americans— locally, nationally, and within a larger global context. Visitors may find themselves grappling with questions such as, “Where does my water come from? How much water do I use every day, and how does that compare to other human beings on our planet today? How does water affect the way we live, work, worship, create and play? How do we care for water and sustain it for the future?”

This multifaceted, powerful, and interactive exhibit explores water as a critical life sustaining natural resource that is central to our daily lives. Our relationship with water is complex; we consume it, manipulate it for economic development, use it in religious and spiritual practices and often for leisure and recreation, yet we are also wholly dependent on it to survive. As issues such as climate change, and public health become more urgent, so does our need to understand the centrality of clean, safe water, and the call for human ingenuity to provide new ways of protecting water resources and renewing appreciation for the natural environment.

Missouri Humanities is pleased to host a statewide tour of the Water/Ways exhibition, in partnership with the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum on Main Street (MoMSinitiative. MoMS provides access to world-class Smithsonian exhibitions in partnership with state humanities councils for small-town museums, cultural institutions, libraries, and art galleries across the nation.
