Virtual Veterans Writing Workshop: Storytelling with Speculative Fiction

July 27, 2024 @ 9:00 am - 12:30 pm

Event Series Event Series (See All)
Free

Missouri Humanities is hosting a FREE two-part summer writing opportunity for veterans, retired and active military, and military-connected family members on Saturday, July 20th & 27th from 9:00 am – 12:30 pm.

Whether you’re interested in fiction, prose, or essay writing, this workshop will explore speculative fiction, a type of storytelling that explores and incorporates both the possibilities and impossibilities of the world, thus creating new realities and challenges.

Participants will engage in conversation around contemporary speculative literature like The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood or The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien. Our expert facilitators will provide guided writing exercises with meaningful feedback. There will be opportunities to give speculative fiction writing a try!

Participants are not required to write solely on their military experience.

  • Alexander Weinstein will facilitate the Saturday, July 20th session. Alexander is the author of the short story collections, Universal Love and Children of the New World, which was chosen as a New York Times Notable Book of the Year, and a best book of the year by NPR and Electric Literature. He is the founder and director of The Martha’s Vineyard Institute of Creative Writing.
  • Kent Walker, a combat Army veteran, and Stacey Walker, a lecturer at three academic institutions, both with MFAs in creative writing will facilitate our Saturday, July 27th session.

Secure your spot today to discover the creative power of speculative fiction and how to harness it as a storytelling vehicle to express your voice as a writer!

The workshop will take place on Zoom. Register for free at: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZUlc-uppzoqGtSZTimxezbiItsu0tOa3Y83
