Seven years after the current Missouri Capitol opened, a grand day was organized to dedicate the building. All 114 counties were invited to send queen representatives, floats and musicians. More than 20,000 attended the morning parade, which was more than 2 miles long. Five Missouri governors spoke and 2 governors from other states were welcomed as being native Missourians. The day ended is a pageant of Missouri’s history, which required 2,200 participants, and fireworks.
Local history author Michelle Brooks will discuss the logistics required to pull off this large-scale event in only three months and she will introduce you to some of the more interesting individuals who made the day a success.
Most of the photos for this presentation are held by the Missouri State Archives.
