Helping to Bring the Humanities to the Public Square

A series of six exhibitions and presentations, curated and implemented by Dr. Billie Follensbee, Museum Studies Program Coordinator, exploring the history and culture of the Ozarks October 2024-September 2025 at the Park Central Library Branch, Springfield, MO. This exhibition series is supported by a Missouri Humanities Council Major Grant.

This exhibition and presentation series features six interpretive exhibitions of historic and prehistoric artifacts that explore the history and culture of the Ozarks region, with research conducted by advanced undergraduate students in Dr. Follensbee’s Art History and Museum Studies classes. This series of exhibitions will be on display at the Park Central Branch Library from October 2024 through September 2025. The opening receptions will take place during the corresponding First Friday Art Walk for the first month of each exhibition, with guest presentations at the receptions by MSU students and alumni who conducted research for these exhibitions. Children’s activity sheets will be available throughout the exhibitions.

EXHIBITION PROGRAM SCHEDULE:

October-November 2024 exhibition opening reception and presentations:
Short description: Celebrating Native American Cultures of the Ozarks Region exhibition opening reception and presentations, Friday, October 4, 6:30-7:30 p.m. (First Friday Art Walk)
Long description: Celebrating Native American Cultures of the Ozarks Region is the October-November interpretive exhibition in the series Helping to Bring the Humanities to the Public Square coordinated by Dr. Billie Follensbee of Missouri State University at the Park Central Branch Library. The exhibition will include a variety of Native American artifacts, including stone projectile points, basketry, and beadwork. The exhibition opening reception is on Friday, October 4, 6:30-7:30 p.m. during the First Friday Art Walk, and will feature the presentations “Researching and Preserving Native American Artifacts” by MSU alumni Jessica Winslow and Kylei Giles. Children’s activity sheets will be available throughout the exhibition.

December 2024-January 2025 exhibition opening reception and presentations:
Short description: What’s on Your Wishlist? Toys of the Late 19th and Early 20th centuries exhibition opening reception and presentation, Friday, December 6, 2024, 6:30-7:30 p.m. (First Friday Art Walk)
Long description: What’s on Your Wishlist? Toys of the Late 19th and Early 20th centuries is the December 2024-January 2025 interpretive exhibition in the series Helping to Bring the Humanities to the Public Square coordinated by Dr. Billie Follensbee of Missouri State University at the Park Central Branch Library. This exhibition includes several Kewpie dolls as well as a variety of other vintage toys. The exhibition opening reception is on Friday, December 6, 2024, 6:30-7:30 p.m. during the First Friday Art Walk, and will feature the presentation “Researching and Preserving Vintage Toys” by MSU student Emery Wilcoxon. Children’s activity sheets will be available throughout the exhibition.

February-March 2025 exhibition opening reception and presentations:
Short description: Keeping Warm in the Ozarks: Cast Iron Stoves in the Late 19th and Early 20th Centuries exhibition opening reception and presentation, Friday, February 7, 2025, 6:30-7:30 p.m. (First Friday Art Walk)
Long description: Keeping Warm in the Ozarks: Cast Iron Stoves in the Late 19th and Early 20th Centuries is the February-March 2025 interpretive exhibition in the series Helping to Bring the Humanities to the Public Square coordinated by Dr. Billie Follensbee of Missouri State University at the Park Central Branch Library. This exhibition includes cast-iron stove parts excavated at the Bonniebrook estate, which illustrate features of different late 19th- and early 20th-century stoves for cooking and heating. The exhibition opening reception is on Friday, February 7, 2025, 6:30-7:30 p.m. during the First Friday Art Walk, and will feature the presentation “Researching and Preserving Iron Artifacts” by MSU alumna Madelyn Pohl. Children’s activity sheets will be available throughout the exhibition.

April-May 2025 exhibition opening reception and presentations:
Short description: Occupations of the Late 19th to Mid-20th Century in the Ozarks exhibition exhibition opening reception and presentations, Friday, April 4, 2025, 6:30-7:30 p.m. (First Friday Art Walk)
Long description: Occupations of the Late 19th to Mid-20th Century in the Ozarks exhibition is the April-May 2025 interpretive exhibition in the series Helping to Bring the Humanities to the Public Square coordinated by Dr. Billie Follensbee of Missouri State University at the Park Central Branch Library. This exhibition includes objects associated with different occupations held by people at the turn of the century in the Ozarks, from railroad workers to milliners to physicians.
The exhibition opening reception is on Friday, April 4, 2025, 6:30-7:30 p.m. during the First Friday Art Walk, and will feature the presentations “Preserving Artifacts of the 20th-Century Ozarks” by MSU Alumni Sarah Teel and Kevin Frey. Children’s activity sheets will be available throughout the exhibition.

June-July exhibition 2025 opening reception and presentations:
Short description: Rose Cecil O’Neill, Author, Illustrator, and Artist exhibition opening reception and presentation, Friday, June 6, 2025, 6:30-7:30 p.m. (First Friday Art Walk)
Long description: Rose Cecil O’Neill, Author, Illustrator, and Artist exhibition is the June-July 2025 interpretive exhibition in the series Helping to Bring the Humanities to the Public Square coordinated by Dr. Billie Follensbee of Missouri State University at the Park Central Branch Library.. This exhibition includes books and illustrations by Rose Cecil O’Neill. The exhibition opening reception is on Friday, June 6, 2025, 6:30-7:30 p.m. during the First Friday Art Walk, and will feature the presentation “Preserving O’Neill’s Books and Illustrations” by MSU alumna Vinita Williams. Children’s activity sheets will be available throughout the exhibition.

August-September 2025 exhibition opening reception and presentations:
Short description: Artifacts from the Bonniebrook Homestead, Late 19th to Mid-20th Century, Missouri exhibition opening reception and presentation, Friday, August 1, 2025, 6:30-7:30 p.m. (First Friday Art Walk)
Long description: Artifacts from the Bonniebrook Homestead, Late 19th to Mid-20th Century, Missouri exhibition is the August-September 2025 interpretive exhibition in the series Helping to Bring the Humanities to the Public Square coordinated by Dr. Billie Follensbee of Missouri State University at the Park Central Branch Library. This exhibition includes early 20th-century household objects as well as objects related to early transportation and automobiles. The exhibition opening reception is on Friday, August 1, 2025, 6:30-7:30 p.m. during the First Friday Art Walk, and will feature the presentation “What Common, Everyday Objects Can Tell Us about Life in the Early 20th-Century Ozarks” by MSU alumna Renee Walker. Children’s activity sheets will be available throughout the exhibition.

The Missouri State University Museum Studies Program, Department of Art and Design, and the Park Central Branch Library, Springfield-Greene County Library System, are sponsoring this program in partnership with the Missouri Humanities Council and with support from the Missouri Humanities Trust Fund.
