On Saturday, April 19, 2025, at 1:00 pm, the Greater Kansas City Black History Study Group will host its monthly program and meeting. The 2025 theme, African Americans and Labor, provides the opportunity to honor the legacy of Mr. A. Philip Randolph, a labor unionist and civil rights activist. Randolph was a prominent voice in the early Civil Rights Movement and is acknowledged as the head of the 1963 March on Washington.
In 1925, Randolph organized and led the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, the first successful African-American-led labor union. The Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters and Maids (commonly referred to as the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, BSCP), was the first labor organization led by African Americans to receive a charter in the American Federation of Labor (AFL). In 2025, we commemorate the 100th anniversary of the BSCP and its legacy of activism for worker’s rights.
Well-known community activist and labor leader, Ms. Patricia A. Jones Macklin will be the featured speaker.
