At Missouri Humanities, we are constantly on the lookout for original perspectives on Missouri and the Humanities. It is in this spirit that we are calling for submissions to be featured in future issues of our monthly Enews.  
 
Submissions may be in the genre of personal narrative, quick-reads, poetry, historical or nonfiction essay, short story, personal reflection, or findings from original research geared towards a public humanities audience.
 
The Enews will published on the 1st of each month throughout the year. If you have a specific month that you would like your submission to be published, please let me know and we will do our best to accommodate you.  Submissions may be submitted at any time however must be submitted at least 3 weeks prior to requested publication date.
 
Multiple submissions may be presented, however, please understand that we do not guarantee publication. We encourage submissions from writers of all levels of experience.

ENews Guidelines

Please review guidelines prior to submission as guidelines may change over time. 

Missouri Humanities (MH) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to strengthen communities and enrich lives by connecting Missourians to the people, places, and ideas that shape society. 

Submission Content

Submissions may be in the genre of a perspectives piece, personal narrative, poetry, historical or nonfiction essay, short story, personal reflection, book or film review or an original research article.  

Formatting the Submission

Articles may be written on any subject of the author’s choice. Preference will be given to submissions related to the MH annual theme. The 2023 Signatures Series theme is Roots and Routes, the Movement and Settlement of Missourians.  We are calling on our partners and MH friends for submissions that focus around this theme, however, we will also consider other humanities-minded ideas.  

While there is no minimum or maximum word count for your submission, please keep your information concise. 

Please include your full job/position title(s) and degree title(s), as well as those of any co-authors.

If your article contains notes from research or for reference, please incorporate into the article’s body, or include as footnotes or endnotes with your article.

Articles should be submitted as text documents (such as .DOC or .RTF). Do not submit articles in .PDF or .PAGES format.

Articles should follow Chicago Manual of Style guidelines, which are summarized for free online at owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/717/01 or can be read in full with a subscription at chicagomanualofstyle.org/home.html.

All submitted images should be in .JPG or .TIF format, 300 dpi, and at least 4″ in width (larger if possible). Please attach images as separate files, independent of your article, and please include any information relevant for captions.  All submissions should include at least one image.

Submissions with excessive formatting or in need of extensive copyediting may be returned to the author for revision; please only submit clean copy with minimal formatting.

Intellectual Property

Copyright for contributions published in any MO Humanities enews is retained by each author with publication rights granted to the MO Humanities. An author’s submission grants MH the right to publish the article.  Content is free to users and the public.

By submitting, you verify that you are the Author of the submitted work, and that the Author grants rights to the MO Humanities for publication.

All images included in the submission article are the responsibility of the Author.  It is the Author’s responsibility to ensure that any images, including images, sound, and video files, used their submissions do not break copyright law.

Submitting an Article

Submissions should be sent in an e-mail with the article as an attachment.  Emails should be sent to chrissy@mohumanities.org at MO Humanities.   In the subject line put “2023 Enews Submission”. The message should include (1) the author’s name, (2) the title of the article, (3) an abstract of no more than 150 words, and (4) any relevant information about the author, including contact information.

Space is limited. All submissions will not be published.  When submissions are scheduled for publication, MH staff will notify author. Articles not chosen for the upcoming issue will be filed and may be considered for other use in the future.   Please note we are unable to respond to all inquiries about the status of submissions. We appreciate your patience!
