SUMMARY:Si Siman\, the Ozark Jubilee\, and Music Business at the Crossroads
DESCRIPTION:Kitty Ledbetter will tell the story of Si Siman’s role in creating\, developing\, securing talent for\, and co-producing the first continuous live network country music television show in history (and one of the first in color)\, the Ozark Jubilee. Almost all major country artists appeared on the Jubilee during its run from 1955 to 1960. At its peak\, 25 to 30 million viewers watched the show every week\, broadcast live from the Jewell Theater in Springfield\, Missouri\, making Springfield the third largest broadcast origination point behind New York City and Hollywood.

He is a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute and is a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army. McCoskrie taught Leadership & Military History for the University of Missouri’s Army ROTC\, and has been a Churchill Fellow and tour guide at the National Churchill Museum in Fulton for the past 13 years. McCoskrie’s books include The Civil War Missouri Compendium: Almost Unabridged and War for Missouri: 1861-1862.

DESCRIPTION:Ragtime\, early blues\, jazz tunes\, Scott Joplin\, WC Handy and rare tunes of the era on piano and percussion! 3:00pm-4:00pm \nStep back in time as Cherry and Jerry bring you some hit tunes and rarely played gems from the ragtime era. With a focus on ragtime\, early blues\, and jazz\, you’ll hear enduring songs such as St. Louis Blues and The Entertainer along with great songs that they’ve dusted off and brought back to life. Fun for all ages\, with a bit of history thrown in! “Cherry & Jerry” is Isaac Cherry on percussion and Jerry Rabushka on piano; they focus mainly on music from 1900-1920: ragtime\, early blues and jazz\, and popular songs from back in the day. Performances include well known tunes such as The Entertainer\, St. Louis Blues\, Georgia on My Mind\, Stormy Weather\, etc as well as rarely played music from the era\, for a unique take on America’s first pop music. Great fun for all ages! The St. Louis duo has toured music of the ragtime era throughout the region\, appearing at libraries\, museums\, pubs and restaurants\, special events\, senior communities\, and more. Join us at the Field House Museum to enjoy an afternoon of poetry honoring the form Eugene Field held dear.\nThis program is free with limited availability in person and on Zoom. Reservations must be made in advance on our website\, by calling the Museum at 314-421-4689\, or by emailing info@fieldhousemuseum.org. \nAbout the Speaker:\nJustin Hamm is the current Missouri Poet Laureate (2025-2027). He is the author of five books of poetry—O Death\, Drinking Guinness With the Dead: Poems 2007–2021\, The Inheritance\, American Ephemeral\, and Lessons in Ruin—as well as the creator of Poet Baseball Cards and founding editor of the museum of americana. Justin was chosen as a 2024 and 2022 Woody Guthrie Poet\, a 2020 Missouri Arts Council Featured Artist\, a finalist for the 2018 River Styx International Poetry Prize\, and the winner of the 2014 Stanley Hanks Memorial Poetry Prize.\nHis poems\, stories\, collages\, and reviews have appeared in Nimrod International Journal\, The Midwest Quarterly\, Sugar House Review\, Verse Daily\, Southern Indiana Review\, the New Poetry from the Midwest anthology series\, and many other publications. In 2022 he delivered a performance entitled “The American Midwest: a Story in Poems” at TEDx Oshkosh\, and in 2019 his poem “Goodbye\, Sancho Panza” was studied by approximately 50\,000 students worldwide as part of the World Scholar’s Cup curriculum.

SUMMARY:How History Shaped Our Times
DESCRIPTION:What is history? How do historians do their work? And why does it matter? \nFormer executive director of the American Historical Association James R. Grossman has been deeply involved in navigating the shifting meaning of the past and how it is being used as a tool today. In a conversation with David Trowbridge\, Grossman discusses the nature of these changes\, how memory and history clash and combine to form our concept of ourselves as Americans\, and the role of historians in these debates. \nGrossman led the AHA from 2010 to 2025. Before that\, he was vice president for research and education at the Newberry Library and taught at the University of Chicago and the University of California\, San Diego. He’s the author of Land of Hope: Chicago\, Black Southerners\, and the Great Migration and A Chance to Make Good: African Americans\, 1900-1929. He’s also served as a consultant on history-related projects with the BBC\, Smithsonian\, theater companies\, filmmakers\, museums\, libraries\, and more. \nTrowbridge is an associate research professor of digital and public humanities at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. His research and teaching focuses on using technology to connect people to history. In addition to writing the textbook\, A History of the United States\, he also created Clio\, a free website and app that gives people information about historical and cultural sites. He is a co-founder of the Kansas City Monuments Coalition\, which launched in 2024. \nA recording of this event will be available on the Library’s YouTube channel. \nThis event is co-sponsored by: KCMC\, a partnership of preservation and commemorative organizations across Kansas City\, is supported by the Center for Digital and Public Humanities at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and funded by the Mellon Foundation.

DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, September 12\, join communities across the country as we honor the nearly 3\,000 lives lost on September 11\, 2001\, and pay tribute to the first responders and service members who answered the call in the days that followed. In partnership with the National Cemetery Administration\, the National Day of Service and Remembrance brings volunteers together at more than 140 participating national\, grant-funded\, and local cemeteries across the country. Volunteers will help clean headstones and beautify these sacred grounds in tribute to our military members\, veterans\, first responders\, and their families. Registration is free\, but required.
