SUMMARY:Beer\, Germans & Methodism
DESCRIPTION:When German immigrant Ludwig Jacoby rode his horse into St. Louis in 1841\, he couldn’t have possibly known the chaos that would ensue. The Methodist minister’s pursuit of building a church was met with challenges so extreme it’s amazing he had the will to push forward: race riots\, violence\, and hatred came from varying directions. Set in the context of St. Louis struggling with the influx of humanity due to massive immigration\, this minister and his congregation navigate a timeline of turmoil. St. Louis Germans encountered a clash of cultures each step of the way\, facing unrest during the Temperance Movement\, the instability of World War I\, and the confusion of Prohibition. Beer\, Germans & Methodism is a look at how German Americans traversed the rocky path of religion\, politics\, and yes\, beer.

SUMMARY:War Pigeon! Missouri’s role in the training of pigeons and pigeoneers in WWII
DESCRIPTION:War Pigeon! Missouri’s role in the training of pigeons and pigeoneers in WWII \nNeosho\, Missouri found itself the home to Camp Crowder\, a US Army Signal Corps replacement training center\, built in 1942. In 1943\, the Army Signal Pigeon Corps moved from New Jersey to Missouri and began operations. Camp Crowder became the training and breeding home to the pigeon corps. Several of the ten Signal Pigeon Companies the Army created in WWII were built and training at Camp Crowder. In 1946 the pigeons moved back to New Jersey\, leaving an unusual history in the Missouri base that has long been forgotten. \nThe presentation covers the Pigeon Corps from 1917-1957\, with an emphasis on the training program at Camp Crowder. It also covers the unusual field formation of the Signal Pigeon Company\, the only Army formation capable of self-sustaining it’s own staffing due to breeding of birds. Stories of hero birds are also told. The program survived through the Korean War and was disbanded in 1957\, 40 years after it’s creation.

SUMMARY:Déjà vu Spirit Reunion
DESCRIPTION:Come explore Missouri’s oldest cemetery where visitors that night experience the stories of early pioneers of Ste. Genevieve by lantern light. Although close to Halloween\, the intent of the Spirit Reunion is not to be “scary” but rather educational\, as you’ll see local people in period costume standing near “their final resting place” and talking about their lives\, loves\, and perhaps how they died. Past participants include Missouri’s Model Senator and his wife who was buried twice\, and the reason why. There’s an aristocrat who fled the French Revolution\, and another killed in a politically motivated street fight\, a priest\, known as the “Patriot Priest”\, Missouri’s first United States representative\, a Civil War colonel killed at the Battle of Shiloh\, the daughter of a Spanish era Commandant\, the first Commandant appointed by the Americans after the Louisiana Purchase transfer\, victims of a steamboat explosion\, a child whose life was cut short by cholera\, plus Mississippi River trappers\, traders\, and Native Americans. From stories about life along the Mississippi and early exploration\, to agricultural and domestic customs of early Ste. Genevieve\, come learn and be entertained at the same time.

SUMMARY:Richard O'Brien's The Rocky Horror Show
DESCRIPTION:The Rocky Horror Show \nOctober 30 – November 9\, 2025 \nIn this cult classic\, sweethearts Brad and Janet\, stuck with a flat tire during a storm\, discover the eerie mansion of Dr. Frank-N-Furter. As their innocence is lost\, Brad and Janet meet a houseful of wild characters\, including a rocking biker and a creepy butler. Through elaborate dances and rock songs\, Frank-N-Furter unveils his latest creation: a muscular man named “Rocky.” \nThat “Sweet Transvestite” and his motley crew did the “Time Warp” on Broadway in a 25th anniversary revival. Complete with sass from the audience\, cascading toilet paper\, and an array of other audience participation props\, this deliberately kitschy rock ’n’ roll sci-fi gothic musical is more fun than ever! \nThis production is a wild\, campy\, and outrageous celebration of individuality\, freedom\, and self-expression. It contains strong language\, sexual themes\, partial nudity\, flashing lights\, and audience interaction. \nLicensed through Concord Theatricals.

SUMMARY:The Great Tornado of 1925
DESCRIPTION:A hundred years ago\, the deadliest tornado in American history originated in southern Missouri. Now known as the “Tri-State Tornado\,” the storm originated near Ellington and swept through southeast Missouri before crossing into Illinois and Indiana. The devastation of the Tri-State Tornado revealed flaws in the nation’s storm forecasting and reporting system that grew out of a lack of coordination and a misplaced desire to avoid public panic\, flaws that took decades to correct. This presentation uses contemporary accounts and images to re-create Missouri’s portion of “the forgotten storm.”

SUMMARY:War Pigeon! Missouri’s role in the training of pigeons and pigeoneers in WWII
DESCRIPTION:Neosho\, Missouri found itself the home to Camp Crowder\, a US Army Signal Corps replacement training center\, built in 1942.

SUMMARY:Love and War: A Doughboy's Diary

SUMMARY:Playing Through Black Golfers Overcoming the Forgotten Color Barrier
DESCRIPTION:A panel discussion on the historic and contemporary challenges faced by minority golfers in Kansas\nCity and around the nation \nPanelists will include;\nDon Kuehn\, 2022 inductee into the Kansas City Golf Hall of Fame; member of the Board of Directors of Central Links Golf and winner of 56 local\, state\, and national tournaments;\nBob Drake\, a retired teacher and former tournament director for the Heart of America Golf Club;\nDwayne Lewis\, a former Center High School and Baker University basketball star who has developed a passion for golf and has played with several groundbreaking Black golfers\, including Charlie Sifford and Jim Dent;\nJudge Jon Gray\, retired Circuit Court Judge and lawyer in private practice. His interests include the connection between amateur and professional sports\, as well as the struggle for equal rights.\nThe moderator for the event is Lewis Diuguid\, former columnist and vice president for community resources for the Kansas City Star. \nThe road to equal access in public accommodations for people of color\, including on the nation’s golf courses\, was fraught with numerous significant challenges. Not the least among them were the infamous Jim Crow Laws mandating racial segregation in public facilities and the PGA Tour’s ”Caucasians Only” clause. In Kansas City\, access to the two Swope Park golf courses in the late 1940s was no exception. Whites were welcomed at Swope #1 (now Swope Memorial)\, but Black golfers were restricted to play at the unkempt\, ill-maintained course “down the hill”: Swope #2. And then\, only on Mondays and Tuesdays! The Black Archives of Mid-America is hosting a panel discussion/forum to explore the history of access to public golf and to look to the future to find ways to make golf more accessible.
