SUMMARY:Meet the Author:  Tim Scherrer with Do Our Part:  The Tragic Tale of the Weldon Spring Ordnance Works
DESCRIPTION:Author Tim Scherrer will present on his new book\, Do Our Part: The Tragic Tale of the Weldon Spring Ordnance Works at the Weldon Spring Interpretive Center on the 86th Anniversary of the Plant announcement. The construction of the Weldon Spring Ordnance works forced the displacement of 727 residents and the elimination of the villages of Howell\, Hamburg and Toonerville in a forty-five day window. The Weldon Spring Ordnance Works employed five thousand workers and produced daily a million pounds of TNT and DNT for the war effort. \nScherrer will tell the story of the plant announcement \, land acquisition and the subsequent U.S Supreme Court case. Also discussed is the construction and operation of the plant\, which made major contributions to the war effort. Also told in the program is the struggles of the Francis Howell School District\, which fought for it’s survival under very difficult circumstances. \nScherrer’s book fills in the details of this tragic story of service\, sacrifice\, and victory in World War II on the Homefront.

SUMMARY:Rural Heritage Day
DESCRIPTION:Felix Valle House State Historic Site is once again participating in Ste. Genevieve’s Rural Heritage Day festival. This annual event celebrates the rural traditions of Ste. Genevieve and Ste. Genevieve County from the mid-1700”s to the mid-1900s. Through live demonstrations and hands-on activities\, guests will discover the importance of rural crafts\, trades and entertainment.\nThis is a community-wide event with multiple locations in downtown Ste. Genevieve\, the Ste. Genevieve Museum and Leaning Center\, and the Centre for French Colonial Life.\nAll Rural Heritage Day activities at Felix Valle House State Historic Site are free. Other sites may charge fees. The historic site will host activities from 10am to 4pm.

DESCRIPTION:Come explore Missouri’s oldest cemetery and experience the stories of early pioneers of Ste. Genevieve by lantern light. Although close to Halloween\, the intent of the Spirit Reunion is not to be scary\, but rather educational\, as you’ll see local people in period costume standing near their final resting place and talking about their lives\, loves\, and perhaps how they died.
